Bin Kings dumpster rental placed on residential street Calgary

Do You Need a Permit for a Dumpster on the Street in Calgary?

Do You Need a Permit to Put a Bin on the Street in Calgary?

Let’s cut straight to it, yes, in most cases you need a permit if your bin is going on a public street, sidewalk, or city right-of-way in Calgary.

We get this question constantly. Homeowners assume we handle it. Contractors assume the homeowner handled it. Nobody handled it. Then the City shows up and suddenly it’s everybody’s problem.

Here’s everything you need to know so that’s not you.

Driveway vs Street — Know the Difference

This is where most people get confused.

Your driveway or private property? No permit needed. Full stop. Put the bin wherever works best on your property and you’re good to go.

City street, boulevard, sidewalk, or lane? That’s public property and the City of Calgary has rules about what goes on it.

If your driveway is long enough or wide enough to fit the bin safely, always go that route. It’s simpler, cheaper, and you don’t have to deal with the City at all.

When You Need a Street Permit in Calgary

If the bin has to go on a public road or right-of-way whether that’s because your driveway is too short, you’re on a lane home, or the job site doesn’t have private space — you need a Traffic Accommodation Permit from the City of Calgary.

Where to get it:
City of Calgary — Roads Department
Online: calgary.ca (search “Traffic Accommodation Permit”)
Phone: 311

What you’ll need:

  • Site address
  • Dates of placement (start and end)
  • Size and type of equipment being placed
  • Contact information

How long it takes:
Standard applications typically process within 3-5 business days. If you need it faster, call 311 directly and explain the timeline sometimes they can expedite.

What it costs:
Fees vary depending on the location, duration, and whether traffic control measures are required. Budget $50-$200+ depending on your situation.

What Happens If You Don’t Get One

Don’t gamble on this. The City patrols for unauthorized equipment on public roads especially in higher-traffic neighbourhoods and during active construction seasons.

If your bin is on the street without a permit:

  • You can be fined
  • The bin can be flagged for immediate removal at your cost
  • If we have to do an unplanned pickup because of a City order, a dry run fee applies on top of everything else

The permit costs less than the fine. Get the permit.

HOA and Condo Rules

If you live in a community with a homeowners association or a condo board, check with them before booking anything. Some HOAs have restrictions on bin placement, bin size, or duration even on private property.

We’ve seen situations where a bin was legally placed on a driveway but the HOA still issued a violation notice. Know your community rules before you book.

Our Responsibility vs Yours

We want to be straight with you on this permits are the customer’s responsibility, not ours.

We’ll deliver the bin to where you direct us. We’ll advise on placement. But we can’t apply for a permit on your behalf, and if the bin gets flagged by the City because a permit wasn’t in place, the costs that follow are on you.

We say this not to be cold about it, we say it because we’ve seen the headaches it causes when people find out after the fact.

The simple rule: bin on your property, no permit needed. Bin on the street, get your permit first, then book.
